HINTERLAND

Hinterland is a photographic series that documents a disused arsenic mine in Cornwall, UK. The area exudes a profound sense of abandonment, where the human impact on the landscape, though once significant, now lingers as a fading imprint. What remains is hinterland -  an in-between space that feels forgotten and untamed. Here you are enveloped by overwhelming quiet, as though the air itself is muted. The atmosphere is often misty, lending the place an otherworldly quality, where the boundaries between reality and illusion blur.

The colours used in the works are a visual representation of the toxic chemicals and elements unearthed by the mining process, still embedded deep within the layers of clay and the ominous pools of stagnant water. These unnatural hues bridge the delicate tension between beauty and danger, evoking both awe and unease. To walk through this hinterland is to experience a space that has become inhospitable, yet deeply intriguing, transformed into a mysterious, otherworldly landscape, unlike any place that feels part of the ordinary world.
