My 39 degree photography trip to Amsterdam and Rotterdam
Amsterdam & Rotterdam
I was heading over for just two nights to collect as many images as I could for upcoming works and projects. I usually seek out highrise architecture for my work, so I assumed that Amsterdam was going to offer some challenges, and demand a slightly new approach. It turns out that I had chosen to go on the hottest days of the year, so I stripped back most of the gear I usually take so I wasn't weighed down in the 39-degree heat. As a result nearly every shot was captured using my Canon 5ds and 24-105mm lens.
I do have an exploratory approach when visiting new cities. I have researched locations/buildings that I definitely wanted to photograph, and the rest is what I discover when I am there.
I wanted to check out the Nemo Museum building - Designed by architect Renzo Piano it is a bold copper colour, boat-like shape that appears to be emerging from the water. As well as getting shots of the structure, it also has a huge rooftop 'Piazza', a great vantage point to capture some elevated shots.
Another definite was the Eye Film Museum Designed by the Viennese firm Delugan Meissl Associated Architects and the neighbouring A'DAM Lookout, with an amazing outlook across the water to Amsterdam Central, and an aerial view of its surrounding buildings.
I went to visit the current ING headquarters which is a very interesting red brick geometric structure, quite a contrast to the London main office where my image “The Lakes’ hangs as part of their collection.
I also managed to fit in a lightning trip to Rotterdam where the architecture grew in scale and quirkiness.
Once I have settled on a style for this series I will add the full project to my home page and Behance portfolio If you want to know when, I will announce it on my socials:
